ActivityWatch Complete Tracking System Setup
ActivityWatch Complete Tracking System Setup
Date: November 17, 2025 Duration: Full session Status: ✅ Complete - All systems operational Location: /Users/alyshialedlie/activitywatch
🎯 Objective
Set up ActivityWatch to track:
- Terminal work
- Git activity
- Chrome profiles & Google accounts
- Claude Code AI help
- Web browsing
- Productivity metrics
📋 Accomplishments
1. ActivityWatch Install
Method: Homebrew (Docker and source builds failed)
What I tried:
- Docker - x86_64 vs ARM64 mismatch
- Build from source - Python 3.14 broke PyO3
- Homebrew - worked with one command
brew install --cask activitywatch
Version: v0.13.2 Server: http://localhost:5600 Built-in parts:
- aw-qt (tray app)
- aw-server (API)
- aw-watcher-afk (idle detection)
- aw-watcher-window (window tracking)
2. Custom Watchers
Built 5 Python watchers to extend ActivityWatch:

Tracks which Claude tools I use.
Features: Tool detection (Read/Write/Edit/Bash), file types, frequency, recent files, session totals. Polls: 10s | Merges: 2 min
3. Browser Extension
Extension: ActivityWatch Web Watcher (Chrome Web Store) Status: Installed and tracking
Tracks: URLs, page titles, time per site, domain stats, tab count. Bucket: aw-watcher-web-chrome
4. Setup
Virtual Environment
Location: /Users/alyshialedlie/activitywatch/venv
pip install aw-client psutil
Packages: aw-client 0.5.15, aw-core 0.5.17, psutil 7.1.3, plus deps (requests, click, jsonschema).
Launcher (start-custom-watchers.sh)
Manages all watchers: start/stop, status, logs.
./scripts/start-custom-watchers.sh all # Start all
./scripts/start-custom-watchers.sh claude # Claude only
./scripts/start-custom-watchers.sh stop # Stop all
./scripts/start-custom-watchers.sh status # Check status
./scripts/start-custom-watchers.sh restart # Restart all

🔧 Challenges & Fixes
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
'dict' object has no attribute 'to_json_dict' | AW needs Event objects, not dicts | Use Event(timestamp=..., duration=0, data=data) |
| “timestamp without timezone” warning | Used datetime.now(timezone.utc) | Use naive datetime.now() (AW handles TZ) |
| TypeError with durations | timedelta vs float | Call .total_seconds() if needed |
| Paths with spaces break scripts | Unquoted variables | Always quote: "$LOG_DIR/file.pid" |
| macOS externally-managed error | System Python locked | Use venv: python3 -m venv venv |
Event Format Fix (Before/After)
Wrong (causes to_json_dict error):
event = {
"timestamp": datetime.now(),
"duration": 0,
"data": data
}
client.insert_event(bucket_id, event) # Fails!
Correct (use Event class):
from aw_core.models import Event
event = Event(
timestamp=datetime.now(),
duration=0,
data=data
)
client.insert_event(bucket_id, event) # Works
📈 Example Use Cases
1. AI-Assisted Development Analysis
from aw_client import ActivityWatchClient
from datetime import datetime
client = ActivityWatchClient()
today = datetime.now().replace(hour=0, minute=0, second=0)
# Get Claude and terminal time
claude_events = client.get_events(f"aw-watcher-claude_{client.client_hostname}", start=today)
terminal_events = client.get_events(f"aw-watcher-terminal_{client.client_hostname}", start=today)
claude_time = sum(e["duration"].total_seconds() for e in claude_events)
terminal_time = sum(e["duration"].total_seconds() for e in terminal_events)
print(f"AI-assisted ratio: {claude_time/(claude_time+terminal_time)*100:.1f}%")
2. Project Time Allocation
# Combine terminal and git data for complete picture
from collections import defaultdict
by_project = defaultdict(float)
for e in terminal_events:
project = e["data"].get("cwd", "").split("/")[-1]
by_project[project] += e["duration"].total_seconds()
for e in git_events:
project = e["data"].get("repo_name", "Unknown")
by_project[project] += e["duration"].total_seconds()
for project, duration in sorted(by_project.items(), key=lambda x: x[1], reverse=True)[:10]:
print(f"{project}: {duration/3600:.2f}h")
3. Tool Usage Patterns
# Analyze which Claude tools are used most
tools_events = client.get_events(f"aw-watcher-claude-tools_{client.client_hostname}", start=today)
from collections import defaultdict
tools = defaultdict(int)
for e in tools_events:
for tool, count in e["data"].get("tools_used", {}).items():
tools[tool] += count
print("Most used tools:")
for tool, count in sorted(tools.items(), key=lambda x: x[1], reverse=True):
print(f" {tool}: {count} times")

💡 Lessons
- Package managers first - Try Homebrew before Docker or source
- Use venvs - Required on modern macOS
- Event models matter - Use proper
Eventclass - Keep docs short - Main docs under 500 lines; details in separate files
- Test early - Verify watchers right away
- Log everything - Helps debug
- Track PIDs - Essential for daemon processes
🎉 Success Metrics
- Trackers active: 8/8 (100%)
- Buckets created: 9/9 (100%)
