🎯 Objective

Set up a comprehensive activity tracking system using ActivityWatch to monitor:

  • Terminal and command-line work
  • Git repository activity
  • Chrome profiles and Google accounts
  • Claude Code AI assistance
  • Web browsing patterns
  • Overall productivity metrics

📋 What Was Accomplished

1. ActivityWatch Installation

Method: Homebrew (after Docker and build-from-source attempts failed)

Installation Journey:

  1. Docker approach - Architecture mismatch (x86_64 vs ARM64 on Apple Silicon)
  2. Build from source - Python 3.14 incompatibility with PyO3
  3. Homebrew - Successful installation with single command
brew install --cask activitywatch

Version: v0.13.2 Server: http://localhost:5600 Built-in Components:

  • aw-qt (system tray app)
  • aw-server (API server)
  • aw-watcher-afk (AFK detection)
  • aw-watcher-window (window tracking)

2. Custom Watcher Development

Created 5 custom Python watchers to extend ActivityWatch capabilities:

Terminal Watcher (aw-watcher-terminal.py)

Purpose: Track terminal and command-line activity

Features:

  • Shell type detection (zsh, bash, fish)
  • Working directory tracking
  • Terminal application identification
  • Git repository detection
  • User context

Poll interval: 10 seconds Merge window: 60 seconds

Git/GitHub Watcher (aw-watcher-git.py)

Purpose: Track version control activity

Features:

  • Repository name and path
  • Current branch tracking
  • GitHub owner/repo detection
  • Modified files count
  • Last commit information
  • Commits ahead/behind remote

Poll interval: 30 seconds Merge window: 5 minutes

Chrome Profile Watcher (aw-watcher-chrome-profiles.py)

Purpose: Track browser profiles and Google account identities

Features:

  • Active Chrome profile detection
  • Google account email extraction
  • Profile display names
  • Account switching detection
  • 5 Chrome profiles detected on system

Poll interval: 30 seconds Merge window: 2 minutes

Claude Activity Watcher (aw-watcher-claude.py)

Purpose: Track AI-assisted development sessions

Features:

  • Claude Code session detection
  • Session duration tracking
  • Project context
  • Files modified during session
  • Working directory
  • Session ID generation

Poll interval: 15 seconds Merge window: 3 minutes Session timeout: 5 minutes inactivity

Claude Tool Usage Watcher (aw-watcher-claude-tools.py)

Purpose: Track specific Claude tool usage patterns

Features:

  • Tool detection (Read, Write, Edit, Bash)
  • File type analysis
  • Tool frequency tracking
  • Recent files accessed
  • Session-level aggregation

Poll interval: 10 seconds Merge window: 2 minutes

3. Browser Extension Setup

Extension: ActivityWatch Web Watcher Source: Chrome Web Store Status: ✅ Installed and tracking

  • Specific URL tracking
  • Page title capture
  • Time per website
  • Domain-level analytics
  • Tab count monitoring

🔧 Technical Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Event Format Issues

Problem: Claude tool errors - 'dict' object has no attribute 'to_json_dict'

Cause: ActivityWatch expects Event objects, not plain dictionaries

Solution:

Challenge 2: Timezone Handling

Problem: Timezone warnings - “timestamp without timezone found”

Cause: Used datetime.now(timezone.utc) instead of naive datetime

Solution:
